Help us understand Ukraine’s
cultural heritage workforce
Our work continues
October 2026
As Russian attacks intensify in Kyiv and across the nation of Ukraine, our commitment to cultural heritage preservation continues. Following our May 2026 symposium, we are building the Center’s institutional foundations and advancing research into the people, skills, and opportunities that sustain Ukraine’s heritage sector.
Our current work focuses on understanding the experiences of students and practitioners, strengthening collaboration, and developing priorities for the Center’s future research and educational efforts.
What does it take to enter and sustain a career in cultural heritage preservation in Ukraine today?
We are gathering perspectives on education, practical training, employment, and the changing demands of heritage work during wartime and recovery.
This research will help identify gaps between academic preparation and professional practice, barriers to employment, and skills needed for Ukraine’s preservation and rebuilding efforts.
We welcome participation from:
Students and recent graduates pursuing heritage-related careers.
Practitioners working in preservation, archaeology, conservation, architecture, and any related fields.
Educators, employers, and people whose work intersects with heritage, including construction professionals and community advocates.
Whether heritage is your primary profession or one part of your work, your experience can contribute to this research.
SUPPORTING THE PEOPLE WHO PROTECT UKRAINE’S CULTURAL HERITAGE
The Center was established in May of 2026 at National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) in collaboration with Nova Ukraine, Cornell University Department of City and Regional Planning, Cornell Institute of Archaeology and Material Studies, and Roblee Historic Preservation as an academic hub for research, education, and advocacy in historic preservation and heritage conservation.
The Center provides a locus for academics, communities, and local and international scholars to conduct innovative research, teaching, and outreach in the heritage field. From an educational perspective, the Center also supports the new bachelor’s program in archaeology at the Department of Archaeology at NaUKMA, aimed at training a new generation of specialists in cultural heritage protection and management, and is actively conducting research to design a wider heritage preservation curriculum at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level.
